The US did the right thing for self-interested reasons that have to do with its envisioned role in determining the outcome of the Russian-led political solution to the War on Syria.
Russia did not get involved in Syria in order to “save Assad”, but to protect the constitutional order of the state and prevent its Libyan-like fall to terrorists.
Trump appeared to be clear-headed and purposive about working with Putin to bring the Syria war to an end and to negotiate an inclusive settlement that brought enduring peace.
